Our Story

Pratham envisions a world where every child is in school and learning well. We reach millions of children and youth around the world through innovative learning and earning programs. By working directly with schools, communities, and government partners, Pratham creates sustainable, large-scale impact, empowering the next generation to thrive.

Pratham USA partners with supporters throughout the U.S. to fund scalable and cost-effective learning programs that reach millions of children and youth globally.

30 Years of Learning

Pratham was established by Dr. Madhav Chavan and Farida Lambay in 1995 with a vision to provide education to children in the slums of Mumbai, India. Partnering with local families, they created preschools, or Balwadis, and offered remedial classes, opening doors to learning and opportunity for thousands.
Over the years, Pratham—meaning ‘first’ in Sanskrit—has grown into a global learning organization, staying true to its name as the first major organization to achieve lasting, wide-scale impact on India’s educational landscape.

From providing innovative education and training programs to tackling barriers to learning at scale, Pratham is strengthening foundational learning skills, preparing youth for the workforce, and helping girls and women complete their education.

Central to Pratham’s success are evidence-backed solutions like our Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology, which helps children build essential reading and math skills by meeting them where they are in their learning journey. Initiatives such as the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) have further amplified Pratham’s impact by equipping families, educators, and policymakers with tools to create lasting change.
From humble beginnings to becoming one of India’s largest and most impactful NGOs, Pratham remains dedicated to unlocking the potential of children, young people, and women through education, empowering them to learn, earn, and thrive.
